Day 2 – Data analysis with R – Workshop with Luuk Sengers

What is the workshop about?

Working in a spreadsheet can become very messy. Especially if you have an exceptionally large dataset and need to do a lot of operations. You have to document every step of the way in order to be able to repeat the same analyses later on.

Luckily there is R. With a few simple lines of code you can do the same things in R as in a spreadsheet: sorting, filtering, pivoting and calculating, but now in a clear workflow in which you can easily make changes and which can be repeated easily and quickly (for example with a new dataset).

The entire work process, from scraping, cleaning and analysis, to calculation, visualization and export, can be done in R. Moreover, combining datasets in R is a doodle.

In a short period of time, R has captured the hearts of many data journalists. Experience for yourself why, in this one-day workshop, given by experienced R data journalist Luuk Sengers.

Who is teaching?

Luuk Sengers is a freelance investigative data journalist for the Dutch weekly De Groene Amsterdammer and an experienced trainer. He teaches at universities and in news rooms, but has also trained and advised NGO's like Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth. His fields of expertise are investigation methods and data journalism.

Together with Mark Lee Hunter he developed Story-Based Inquiry, a benchmark method for investigative reporting, and he co-authored several books about investigative journalism. Luuk speaks regularly at IRE, GIJC, CIJ and Data Harvest conferences, the world’s leading forums for investigative journalisms best practices.

Previously he worked as a staff reporter at several newspapers and magazines in The Netherlands, like NRC Handelsblad and Intermediair, covering business and climate. And he served ten years in the board of the VVOJ, the Dutch-Belgium association of investigative journalists.

Summary of day 1
Simple statistics with R
Creating charts in R
Cleaning data in R
Tips for further study

In 2019 we offer 2-day workshops for the first time. On the one hand for participants who want to deal with the topics intensively and on the other hand for attendees of our workshops in the past three years who want to update and deepen their knowledge. The two days need to be booked seperatly.

Day 1
Introduction to R
The advantages of R
Tour in R Studio
Six basic functions for data analysis
Exercises with up-to-date European data on industrial and agricultural pollution
Combine data files
More exercises

Book Tickets for Day 1 here.

After this workshop you will be able to do the following in R:

- create rankings
- search for typical examples in data (based on averages)
- search for exceptions (outliers)
- spot trends (calculate percentage changes)
- calculate stakes (portions)
- group and select data
- merge multiple datasets into one
- data cleansing (basic)
- create graphs in R (basic)

You will also receive a list of online tutorials and an extensive textbook with the examples from the course.
In this course you will use your own laptop. The necessary software (R and R Studio) is free and can be downloaded and installed from the internet in advance.
