Sunlight.Europe Election Accountability
Thousands of political candidates run for office with almost no scrutiny. We’re building citizen-powered investigations to close that gap in Montenegro, Switzerland and Spain.
Across Europe, elections often involve hundreds or even thousands of candidates. No newsroom can thoroughly check them all. That leaves local and regional politics — the level closest to people’s daily lives — with the least scrutiny, despite its direct impact on communities.
Building on our experience in Germany, Sunlight.Europe closes this gap. Journalists and citizens investigate candidates together. Citizens help verify candidate information and contribute to public-interest reporting, work that would otherwise be out of reach for newsrooms alone.
The project is led jointly by Seek Initiative, CORRECTIV and MuckRock. Partner newsrooms in Montenegro, Spain and Switzerland investigate election candidates, engage directly with citizens and grassroots networks, and publish accessible, locally relevant reporting. Each adapts the approach to its own electoral system and information landscape.
The project runs from autumn 2026 through the end of 2027.
