David arbeitete schon datenjournalistisch, als wahrscheinlich nur wenige überhaupt das Wort kannten: Mithilfe von Kollegen beim Chaos Computer Club entschlüsselte er sensible Daten der sogenannten „Stasi Liste“, die er 1990 in der „Tageszeitung“ veröffentlichte. David hat als freier Journalist über bundesdeutsche Geheimdienste, die Stasi und Al-Qaida berichtet. Seit 2001 arbeitete er zunächst als freier Mitarbeiter und ab 2004 als Investigativer Korrespondent für das „Wall Street Journal“. Später berichtete er über Korruption in der internationalen Wirtschaft. Unter anderem konnte er dubiose Zahlungen der Dresdner Bank an den heutigen Präsidenten der Russischen Föderation, Wladimir Putin, aufdecken. Er erhielt den „Business Journalist of the Year Award“ für seine Berichterstattung über den Siemens-Schmiergeldskandal. Für seine Recherchearbeiten zum Demokratieabbau in Russland gehörte er zu den Finalisten für den Pulitzer Preis und den Daniel Pearl Award des International Consortium of Investigative Journalists.

Le tangenti pagate da HP hanno assicurato a Putin la lealtà di una cricca di magistrati. E gli hanno cosi permesso di esercitare un totale controllo sull'apparato giudiziario russo.
