Dear anonymous Frontex press officer,

thank you for your email dated Aug. 12, in which you „express the disquiet of Frontex“ about a story published by us on Aug 4.

I am writing to you to express my disquiet at your attempts to bully media by issuing 24 hour deadlines to change coverage. In our democracy, only courts can order media to amend coverage and we do not take bullying attempts lightly. What they generally achieve is that we’re even more interested in the subject, so: don’t ever send us such an email again. Simply call or send an email with your concerns and we’ll check and respond.

Having said that, we are always prepared to correct what we got wrong so I looked carefully at your email.

Some of it was hard to follow and seemed in parts to be copy and paste from emails to other media (there is a mention of two specific flights, which I struggle to find any reference to in our story?) but we have corrected our story in two areas: we no longer say that Frontex uses its own satellites for surveillance and we also no longer use the word
„leak“ to describe what was discussed in the December 2017 phone call between your official and the researcher and have expanded that section to reflect your version of events.

It caught my eye that no official signed your email. This detail may appear somewhat anodyne but I think it illustrates well the struggle of your organization with accountability and transparency.

Anyways, you have my phone numbers now so please let me know should you have any more concerns.

Yours, Frederik
